April 7 - In a press conference yesterday President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran warned against the further expansion and resuscitation of capitalism, led primarily by the United States and its allies.
While visiting the Kazakh capital of Astana, the President said, "The US administration and certain capitalist countries seek to pin the blame for the current global economic crisis on others and call for collective cooperation to settle the problem."
"The economic crisis gripping the world is a crisis caused by a capitalist system," he added.
President Ahmadinejad called on regional countries to collaborate towards the creation of a common currency for their own trade exchanges, an idea proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran during the 10th summit of the Economic cooperation Organization (ECO) last month.
The member nations of the ECO include Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The combined population of these countries totals more than 400 million people, and an adoption of a single currency amongst them could potentially have significant impacts on the world economy.
